Scope and Challenges of Self-Directed Learning in Undergraduate Medical Education: A Systematic Review

Context: Self-directed learning (SDL) is an individual’s ability to effectively use various strategies reach his/her goals. We conducted this systematic review explore the different methods, advantages, and challenges in SDL. Method: A comprehensive literature search on PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar databases was carried out using keywords such as “self-directed learning”, “self-regulated “medical undergraduate curriculum” among articles published between 2010 2020. Original having were included. The data summarized analyzed thematically. Results: Out of total number 1781 screened articles, sixteen eligible studies included review. Flipped classrooms, problem-based learning, case-based scenarios, video lectures, e-learning commonly used methods. Self-assessment, time management, motivation, teamwork, critical thinking advantages. Faculty guidance, constraints, distraction due technology, lack organizational skills, difficulty learn complex topics common Conclusions: Most recent years explain growing interest SDL medical curriculum. Despite numerous advantages SDL, there are several limitations specific defined guidelines for its implementation. Further research required structured methods effective
